‘Do unto others what you would have done unto you’

As written by a friend.

It is inconceivable that the maxim ‘do unto others what you would have done unto you’ could be erroneous. It is a fundamental belief that has been instilled in our lives from the time we could understand the spoken language. But time and time again in life we find this to be untrue.

Let me clarify, is doing the right thing at any cost the prudent thing to do? Is putting someone else’s happiness above your needs the smart thing to do? As a person who has been converted to cynicism through life’s events, I would probably say that this is not the smart thing to do.

I see only grey…

My life as it stands now can only be deemed as one big mess! Looking at my life from one particular angle (with your neck strained to the far right I think), it’s quite simple. I’ve completed my degree, I want to get my life on track and in order to do that I need to become independent (which sadly I’m far from, at least financially) and I’ve somewhat figured out how I’m going to get about it. That doesn’t seem too complicated now does it? Unfortunately though, it is.

Accidental Inventions!

Ever wonder how many objects, food stuffs and machines were initially discovered? Well believe it or not, many of them were mere accidents turned great inventions. From the discovery of the Popsicle, to that of Velcro to the microwave, they were all in fact accidental discoveries, stumbled upon whilst researching some other topic or completely by chance. However, someone once said that “luck favors the prepared mind”, which means that if someone didn’t figure out that the discovery (be it accidental or not) would be beneficial to the masses, then it would have been all in vain.

Contrary to common belief, not all inventions and discoveries were made by renown intellects or eccentric geniuses, many of these discoveries were made by ordinary, everyday folk, of all ages, whilst going about their routine chores.

Take for instance the story of 11 year old, Frank Epperson, way back in 1905, who was sitting on his front porch stirring a soda, with a stirring stick. However, as something distracted him, he jumped up and ran off forgetting his soda. It was so cold that night that the drink froze with the stick in it. The next day, Frank had a Popsicle! But it wasn’t until 18 years later in 1923 that Frank started selling these frozen treats. He called them ‘Epsicles’ at first (after his own last name).

Why it’s so great being a woman!

Universally women have earned a reputation for using many different means to get what they want. Be it a smile, wit, charm, aggression, or a bit of all, they’ve been known to possess the successful art of positive manipulation, where one feels that what they want you to do and what you want to do are one and the same thing. However, these are not the only reasons why it’s great belonging to the female race. Here are the top 20 reasons we found, listed in no particular order.

The Cat in you!

“Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.” said Eleanor Roosevelt. Keeping this in mind, have you ever pretended to claw your face and meow at a friend who was bad-mouthing someone else with a passion? Like it or not, however nice you may be, something or someone will bring out the cat in you. The frequency and intensity of the outburst however may vary from person to person but, nevertheless there is that cat lurking within each one of us, awaiting its chance to lunge forward. No matter how hard we try to conceal or suppress this side of us, its prevalence is inevitable and it ‘will’ surface eventually. There’s no stopping it but, you can give curtailing it, your best shot!

Same but different…

Ever heard of the phrase “same but different…”? Well it rings true in most cases, particularly with regards to your choice in attire and how you opt to carry it off. For instance, a couple of my work mates and I were strolling into office one day, when we were quite taken up with our reflection on one of the glass doorways into office. I don’t mean we were taken up with our appearance per say (that goes without saying!) but, as to how similarly we were clad but yet…how different we looked.

We were all sporting jeans and t-shirts and similar footwear but, either due to the way we walked or whether we’d decided to tuck our t-shirts in or the colour we had chosen… we each looked unique in our own right. Like I for one what the average person would refer to as the ideal ‘Hadda’. On the rare day that I come even a ‘bit’ spruced up to work, it sends shock waves throughout my office and everyone’s asking me what the occasion is or if I’m feeling alright.

Prowlers of the night!

Come 10pm whilst the rest of the world prepares to sleeps, we the prowlers are all out for a midnight feast, chat all night or watch movies until the wee hours of the morning. This is the best time of day, why do so many people miss out on it? It’s beyond our comprehension why people would voluntarily miss out on the finest hours. That’s for all except… us of course.

What do we see that everyone else misses out on? Plenty!!! The beautiful moonlit pathways, the quiet streets, the creatures out at night in search of prey, the rather ‘interesting’ people hanging out at street corners, the tempting aromas from ‘saiivar’ kade’s wafting in the air. I mean what are these so called ‘morning people’ thinking?

More antics from Dane-dom!!!

Sorry for the long delay, have been a bit busy. How have u all been doing? We went and watched ‘Brokeback Mountain’ yesterday. The cinema itself was nothing much but, the movie was fab!!! It was very sad but, fantastically and tastefully directed. It won 3 Oscars (including best director) it seems day before yesterday. We went with some of r SL guys and girls and our coordinators son (a Dane). The SL guys were in shock at certain points (as u can jst imagine) but, all in all they handled it pretty well.

We also went to Lubeck (an old trading town in Germany). Everything was dirt cheap there!! (In comparison to Denmark that is….not SL) So, u guys may get alot of German and possibly Swedish things rather than Danish things k? We didn’t do much sight seeing there, mostly shopping but, we did see a few things. We crossed the border on a ferry. It was so cool. The whole bus jst drives into the ferry, then we get out of the bus and go up on the deck for abt 45 mins and then come back down to the bus and drive out agn. So, cool huh? The thing is huge!!!!! It was freezing on the deck but we I’ve put all the pix onto a disc which I’ll show u all once I get back. I’ll print a few too once I’m in SL.

Whoohoo!!!!!

Just HAD to make a blog entry about this great day!!! Just had to!!! Today, March 12, 2006 is a momentous, remarkable, phenomenal, incredible, absolutely stupendous day for all cricket loving, Aussie hating cricket fans the world over!!!! Today lovely, lovely South Africa (a devoted fan of SA I’m not, however, an ardent fan of ANY team that whoops some serious Aussie ass I am for sure!!!!) And boy did SA do just that today!!!

The fifth ODI between SA and Aussie was played in Johannesburg today. The Aussie’s put 434-4 on the board at the end of 50 overs, (breaking our record of 398-5 vs Kenya in Kandy by the by). Having done so, they quite smugly sent SA to bat having no doubt of their almost inevitable victory!!! But, boy oh boy were they mistaken!!! Gibbs with his fab 175 and Smith with his “as fab” 90 put SA well on its way to victory!!! However, they finally made it with one wicket and one ball to spare!!!! Whoohoo!!!!

Man I so wish I could have seen it!!!! Screw Denmark and their ‘keen’ interest in Cricket….NOT!!! Thank God for repeat telecasts and good ole cricket loving SL!!!

Kudos SA…..for a truly fantabulous victory!!!!
