Hey Stranger, I Miss You…!

Ever heard of friends who don’t quite comprehend the idea of individual space but, were faithful products of the “eat together, drink together, shit together…” clan phenomenon? Who could never get enough of each other? Who’d spend an entire weekend together down south, return to Colombo and hang out at someone’s house and then go out for coffee? Who’d laugh with you and sometimes at you (but making sure that you’re laughing at you too), comfort you when your whole world falls apart and sometimes, just be there, because sometimes just knowing that is enough…”
Today I have a confession to make.

HAVE YOU, EVER?

Have you ever looked up at the full moon sky?
And dreamt of its cool surface.. and..
Had it ever hit you like a blow from the darkness of that same night
The impossibility of ever touching that silvery light?

Have you ever sat down on the yellow beach and
Gazed and marveled at the ever stretching blue sea?
Had it ever come to mind that the far horizon
If could be reached would only be in a dream?

Have you ever felt like a hapless deer in the desert?
Who would follow the waters, in its mind?
And though be deceived, each time is tempted to repeat?

Have you ever looked into someone’s eyes and said
“I love you” a million times…
…but only in your mind?

Will you ever know what it feels like to be the one who loves
From a distance, living and dying each moment,
And watching.. just life and love pass you by…

Oh…for the days of “Real TV”!!!

They just don’t make TV like they used to, do they? Can you imagine a kid growing up in the year 2020 not knowing what Sesame Street is? Or worse yet, find it too “childish” for their viewing? I shudder at the thought! How could anyone grow up not knowing Big Bird, Bert & Ernie, Elmo and Oscar the Grouch? I mean, every parent must know the saying I’m sure? “Take all your vitamins, eats lots of greens, have an afternoon nap and Watch Sesame Street…it’ll make you healthy wealthy and wise!!!” It was shows like Sesame Street that made our childhood so special and well, ‘child-like’ as it were.

The Battle

All I can hear is the monotonous sound of the fan blades running after each other, almost like a race which no one can win. Now and then this continuous hum is interrupted by the sound of my fingers tapping on the key board…. The little bit of noise that is left in the room would soon be swept away. And everything will be still. Will it return tomorrow? I ask my self, what is sound?

The white walls, the white computer screens, the white ceiling have won the battle over all the colours around me. My eyes could only see white. Everywhere. White. And then I stop to think, isn’t white a colour?…or is it?

I get carried away, with a gentle draft that brushes against my skin. I wonder if it’s the fan that’s creating it. Or is it the frills of her skirt as she spins in front of me. But there’s no laughter… her voice is lost in an echo. “Kiri kiri bollei….”. I wonder if my eyes were wrong to see her smile that day. Was she really smiling…?

“If anything can go wrong, it will”

I must begin by stating (just for the record) that as of December 18, 2006 a.k.a. our ambitious quest to conquer the magnificent Adam’s Peak, (better known as Sri Pade), my respect for Edward Murphy has grown in great abundance!

“I remember it as clearly as it were just yesterday. There were six of us enthusiastic expeditors. Hope and anticipation glistening in our eyes. We had unanimously decided on the challenge. The scene was set. We were to take the 6 a.m. inter-city train from the Fort railway station to Hatton and then get picked up by the owner of the rest house we were to stay in, from there. Now, this was in fact ‘The Plan’. Little did we know at the time though, that every single aspect of this very ‘plan’, would eventually fall apart, not even leaving behind a trace of it’s existence…”

One of the simple joys of childhood

Just getting re-acclimatised (ok so I just made that word up!) after my recent trip to Nuwara Eliya, I thought I’d recount a special something about my childhood which I re-discovered enroute my trip to the hills!

“One of the guys”

Ever wondered how far into your life a tag like this can remain with you? A long time, believe you me. Take it from someone who’s spent 18 years of her life being treated like one of the guys. Don’t get me wrong, I loved every moment of it but, it was (I mean is) quite a novel experience still.
